Septic Tank Service in Marion, Indiana
If you live outside Marion city limits, there’s a good chance your home runs on a septic system and a private well. Out toward
Somerset,
Van Buren, Roann and North Manchester, that’s the norm rather than the exception — and it means the plumbing in your house is only half the system.
Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling has been working on rural properties across Grant, Wabash and Blackford counties
since 1969. We handle septic tank pumping, inspection, diagnosis and repair, and we’re the same crew that handles the
well on the other side of the property.
Signs Your Septic System Needs Attention
Septic problems announce themselves gradually, then all at once. If you’re seeing any of these, call before it becomes an excavation.
Drains are slow all over the house
One slow drain is usually a
clog in that fixture. Every drain in the house running slow at the same time points further downstream — the main line, the tank inlet, or a tank that’s full.
Gurgling in the toilets or tub
Air being pushed back through the system. Often the first symptom, and often ignored for months.
Standing water or lush grass over the drain field
A patch of grass noticeably greener than the rest of the yard means effluent is surfacing. That’s a failing drain field, and it’s the expensive end of septic trouble.
Odor around the tank or in the basement
Sewer gas indoors is a venting or trap problem. Outdoors near the tank, it usually means the tank is overfull or a lid seal has failed.
Backups after heavy rain
Indiana springs saturate the ground. A system that backs up only after a wet stretch is telling you the drain field can’t absorb what it’s getting.
What We Do
Pumping and cleaning. Routine tank pumping on the schedule your system and household size call for.
Inspection. We check tank levels, inlet and outlet baffles, lid condition and the line from the house. If we need eyes inside the line, a
camera inspection shows exactly where the problem is instead of guessing.
Line repair. The run from your house to the tank is plumbing, and it fails the same way any
sewer line fails — roots, bellies, cracks, separated joints. We repair it and
replace it when it’s past repair.
Backups and emergencies. Sewage backing into a house is not a wait-until-Monday problem. We offer after-hours emergency service and our phones are answered 24/7.
How Often Should a Septic Tank Be Pumped?
The common guidance is every three to five years, but that range is wide for a reason. A two-person household on a 1,500-gallon tank sits at the long end. A family of five with a garbage disposal and a laundry habit sits at the short end, sometimes shorter.
What actually determines it: tank size, how many people live in the house, whether you run a disposal, and how much water goes down the drain in a week. We’ll tell you where your system falls after we’ve looked at it, rather than selling you a schedule off a chart.
Septic and Well Together
Most homes on septic in this area are also on a private well, and the two interact. A failing drain field near a wellhead is a contamination question, not just a plumbing one. If we’re already servicing your
well pump or
sanitizing your well, it makes sense to look at both in one visit.
Hard water and iron are common on wells out here too, and both are hard on fixtures.
Softeners and
filtration are worth discussing while we’re on site.
What Septic Systems Don’t Tolerate
Worth knowing, because most of the emergency calls we run trace back to one of these.
- Wipes labeled flushable. They are not.
- Grease down the kitchen drain.
- Heavy garbage disposal use — it roughly doubles the solids load.
- Chemical drain openers, which kill the bacteria the tank depends on.
- Paint, solvents and unused medication.
- Parking or driving over the drain field.
