Water Filtration Services in Bloomington, IN | Summers PHC

No matter how well-treated your city’s water supply is, the long trek from the treatment plant to your faucet means there are plenty of opportunities for contaminants to get absorbed into your water. While some of these contaminants might only make your water taste or smell a little off, some chemical compounds, as well as viruses and bacteria, can pose a significant health risk. That’s why it’s a good idea to think about installing a water filtration system in your home.

Types of Water Filtration

There are many different options when it comes to water filtration systems, so many that it can be a little confusing. The experts at Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling are happy to help you choose the right filtration system for your needs. Here are some of the common options you’ll see:

Activated Carbon

Activated carbon filters use a type of charcoal that’s been processed to increase its absorbency. As water passes through an activated carbon filter, it traps chemicals and particulates while allowing water to pass through. The carbon helps neutralize odors and makes your water appear much clearer, making it an attractive option for drinking water.

However, activated carbon can’t filter everything, and minerals, salts, and other dissolved compounds can pass into your water, as well as bacteria and viruses.

Reverse Osmosis

In a reverse osmosis system, water is forced through multiple filters on its way to your faucet. The first layer is a sediment filter, which eliminates dirt, sand, and other particulates. The second is a carbon filter, like the one already described. The final filter is a semipermeable membrane, which is perforated with tiny holes large enough for water molecules to pass through while leaving other, larger chemicals on the other side.

While this process filters out much more than a single activated carbon filter, they’re also more expensive and don’t get rid of viruses or bacteria that may be present in the water.

Ultraviolet Light

While not exactly a filter, ultraviolet (UV) light is very effective at killing viruses and bacteria. Because the light doesn’t remove chemicals or sediment, you should consider UV light as part of a larger water filtration system.

Advantages of Water Filtration

There are several benefits to installing a water filtration in your home, including:

Improved Drinking Water

Having drinking water that tastes and smells pure is a great way to help you drink more water throughout the day. But even more important is knowing what’s not in your water. As it travels to your home, your drinking water can become contaminated with chemicals like:

  • Lead
  • Chlorine
  • Fluoride
  • Arsenic
  • Salts
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

These chemicals are removed when your water is filtered through a reverse osmosis system, although an activated carbon filter will also capture many of them.

Protect Your Plumbing

Both the chemicals and minerals in your water can damage your plumbing over time. But these compounds can also damage your appliances, like your washing machine and your dishwasher.

Cost Savings

Most bottled water is filtered using reverse osmosis, so when you filter your home’s tap water, you can cut out buying bottled water, which can lead to big savings.

Environmentally Friendly

When you eliminate the need for bottled water, you’ll also help keep from introducing more garbage into the waste stream.
