Symptoms of Sewer Line Problems

For the most part, homeowners don’t have to pay a lot of attention to their sewer line…as long as it’s working correctly. But when problems start to develop in your sewer line, it’s important to take action as soon as possible. Putting off repairs or replacement can lead to much bigger issues—and more expensive repairs.

Here are some of the signs your sewer line might be malfunctioning.

Unpleasant Smells

Sewage has a distinct smell, like rotting eggs. You may start to smell sewage coming from your drains or you might catch a whiff outside your home. In either case, this is a good indication that you have either a sewer clog or leak.

Gurgling Noises

Gurgling noises can come from several parts of your plumbing system, including flushing toilets, draining bathtubs, or appliances like your washing machine or dishwasher. This could indicate you have a blockage somewhere in your system, including your sewer line.

Drains Backing Up

Having raw sewage back up into your drains is one of the most common—and alarming—signs that your sewer line is malfunctioning.

Lush or Soggy Lawn

If your lawn is saturated with water during dry conditions or you notice patches of unusually lush grass in your lawn, it may indicate that you have a leak in your sewer line.

Insects and Rodents

When your sewer line springs a leak, it releases sewage that attracts a number of insects. Those insects then attract rodents, like mice and rats. If you notice a sudden increase in either of these pests, it’s likely you have a problem with your sewer line.

Sewer Line Replacement

If you think that you might have a problem with your sewer line, your first step should be to contact the experts at Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling. Our technicians will investigate your system and help you get your plumbing back in shape.

Our drain replacement services start with a drain camera inspection, in which we send a camera attached to a flexible cable into your sewer line to look for blockage or damage. That inspection will help your technician to determine the next step, which may be a repair or a sewer line replacement.

Our team is usually able to handle clogged lines with either a powerful auger—usually called a snake—or high-powered water jets. However, if we notice cracks or other damage to your sewer line, there are options available to avoid digging, which include relining and pipe bursting.

In relining, we insert a resin-coated cylinder into your sewer line. Once it hardens, it permanently seals the damaged section. While this solution does slightly reduce the size of the pipe, it’s an economical choice to keep your sewer line running.

Pipe bursting, on the other hand, replaces your sewer line by expanding the existing pipes, then installing a new sewer line inside the now-widened pipes. This process uses a hydraulic tube that we insert into your sewer line, which inflates to push the sides of the pipe away, leaving ample room for a new pipeline.

If the damage to your sewer line is too severe, we may need to dig in order to complete your sewer line replacement. If that’s the case, we’ll do our best to limit any impact on your daily life, getting the job done quickly and efficiently.
