Signs There’s a Problem With the Sewer Line

There’s no real need to pay attention to the sewer system when it’s working properly, but if problems start to appear, getting help immediately is a good idea. By putting off repairs or replacements, you could be looking at a much bigger issue and more costly repairs. Some of the signs there may be problems with the sewer line include the following.

Bad Odors

Sewage tends to smell like rotting eggs. If there’s an issue with the sewer lines, this can be smelled from the drains or outside the home. When it is noticed, it’s likely there is a clog in the sewer line or a leak.

Gurgling Sounds

Gurgling sounds can appear when you’re flushing the toilet, running appliances like the washing machine, or draining bathtubs. If you notice a gurgling sound, it’s an indication that there is a blockage somewhere in the system, such as in the sewer line.

Back-Ups in Drains

The most frequent sign of a sewer line problem, and one of the most alarming, is that there is raw sewage backing up into the home. If this happens, help is needed immediately, as this is a health hazard.

Yard is Soggy

If the yard is heavily saturated even though there has been little rain lately, it could be a leak in the sewer line. This can also be noticed if the grass is growing a lot better in one area compared to another.

Increase in Pests

Sewage that manages to leak out of the sewer line is going to attract insects, which can then attract mice and rats. If there is an increase in insects or rodents, it’s possible there is an issue with the sewer line that’s attracting them.

Getting a Sewer Line Replacement

If there’s a possibility with the sewer line, the first thing you should do is contact the technicians at Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling for help. Our technicians can do a full inspection and help make sure your plumbing is in good shape. We start drain replacement services with a full inspection done with a camera. We’ll send a camera that’s attached to a cable through the sewer line to find out if it’s blocked or damaged. Then, we can determine whether a repair or a full sewer line replacement may be needed.

Clogs can typically be handled with a powerful auger or water jets. If there are cracks or other damage, relining may be an option that allows us to avoid digging up and replacing the pipe. Pipe bursting might be a different option that can be used to minimize damage. For pipe relining, a resin-coated cylinder is pushed into the sewer line. It will harden, permanently sealing the part of the pipe that is damaged. This will slightly reduce the size of the sewer line, but it is a more cost-effective option to keep the sewer line working. Pipe bursting is a process where the existing pipes are widened, then new pipes are pushed inside of the old ones to replace them.

In some cases, the damage may be too severe, so digging will be necessary. If this happens, we strive to limit the impact this might have on your life. We’ll make sure the job is done as quickly as possible for you.
