Why Do Pipes Burst?

Several factors can cause a pipe to burst. One of the most common is winter weather. When temperatures drop below 32 degrees, water in a pipe freezes and expands, and the pipes crack under the pressure. This happens more often with exposed pipes and outdoor faucets, but it can occur with interior pipes as well.

Foundation settling can also cause pipes to burst. Expansive soils or improperly prepared construction sites can pave the way for excessive foundation settling. Substandard building materials and shoddy foundation installation work can also lead to this type of problem. Regardless of the cause, if a foundation settles more quickly and extensively than normal, it can place substantial strain on pipes and cause them to burst.

Age is another factor that plays a role in burst pipes. Plumbing systems can last anywhere from 20 years to a century or more depending on the types of pipes and fittings you have in place. Still, time, corrosion, and constant use can take a toll on them. Over time, all that wear and tear could cause a pipe to crack, crumble, or burst. Other elements can factor into the equation as well, but these are the ones we see most often.

How Do I Know if I Have a Burst Pipe?

If an exposed pipe or outdoor faucet bursts, it’s hard to miss. You’ll notice water oozing or spraying out of the pipe when someone turns on the water or a fixture or appliance drains. Unfortunately, many burst pipes aren’t so easy to spot. Certain warning signs can let you know there’s a problem, though.

  • Reduced Water Pressure. Low water pressure can be a clue that you have a burst pipe.
  • Water Damage. Burst pipes may not be visible, but they’ll certainly leave their mark. Dark stains or soft spots in the walls, ceilings, or floors are signs that water is entering areas where it shouldn’t be.
  • Unexplained Puddles. Burst pipes that are hidden underground can be particularly difficult to find. If you see unexplained puddles that tend to appear in the same spot time after time, that’s a good sign there’s a burst pipe in that area. You may also notice that the grass in a certain spot in your yard is thicker and greener than what’s around it. This is a good indication that the spot is getting more moisture, which could be coming from a broken pipe.
  • Bad Smells. Unpleasant odors in the kitchen or bathroom or musty smells permeating your home are definitive warning signs that you have a leaking pipe. Musty odors indicate that excess moisture may be creating a breeding ground for mold or mildew. Foul odors in the bathroom mean that a broken pipe may be allowing sewer gases to escape into your home.

If any of those problems arise, there’s a good chance you have a burst pipe. Though taking note of exactly where the puddles, smells, or stains are can help pinpoint the issue, it’s not always a cut-and-dried process. Contact us, and we’ll take care of the problem.
