Reasons To Use An Air Purification System

Modern houses typically feature more efficient HVAC systems because the ductwork is likely better sealed against air leaks than houses constructed during previous decades. But that can offer some downsides too. The same air can become repeatedly circulated throughout the system and miss the opportunity to pull in the fresh air.

The consequence is that stale air can lead to poor indoor air quality. Surprisingly, when this happens, the indoor air quality can be up to five times worse than what you might find outdoor. This can lead to an array of issues for homeowners. Significantly so for those in the residence who may already suffer from allergies or asthma.

This is one reason you may want to consider incorporating an air purification system into your current HVAC system. Other reasons may include:

  • a persistent stuffy smell in your home
  • there is a smoker in the residence
  • there are pets on the premises
  • someone in the household is sensitive to poor air quality
  • unexplained headaches, sneezing fits, or congestion
  • the home is inexplicably dusty

If one or more of these conditions are noted, it may be time to consider Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling’s air purification services. We can help improve the indoor air quality, allowing you to breathe easier.

Types Of Air Purification Systems

Once you’ve decided on using an air purification system, the next step is to determine which one. There are many purification and filtration systems currently available. While there is a standard of 1-inch thickness for filters, most HVAC systems will continue to filter out large dust particles. Unfortunately, they will not be able to prevent smaller particles from circulating within the system. That is why one of the following systems may prove a better option.

Advanced Filters

A media filter is known as the standard for HVAC systems. Some can be as thick as 4 inches. Even at this size, smaller particles are still able to pass through. The filter will require regular replacement to becoming blocked.

Another type of filter, the HEPA filter, will prevent particles as small as 0.3 microns from passing through. This results in a stoppage of approximately 99.97% of circulated contaminants. HEPA filters have a much longer lifespan, about several years’ worth of usage, but they must be cleaned regularly. Additionally, some HEPA filters offer the option of carbon to reduce the presence of chemicals.

Electronic Air Purification Systems

Another air purification system option is the electric system. In this case, the air is pushed through the electrically charged filter. The charge attracts the unwanted particles and prevents them from being circulated through the system. The filter essentially becomes a magnet for those mold, dust, dander, and allergen particles. Again, these filters will last for many years but likewise, require cleaning on a regular basis.

UV Light Purification Systems

Finally, for those pollutants that are inert, UV light can be utilized to fend against biological factors such as viruses and bacteria. The use of UV purifiers does not offer a reduction of particulates like dander or pollen. So, it is an option to be used alongside one of the other filtration options. Many electronic air purifiers already have either UV lights built-in or can be easily adapted to include UV lights. HEPA filters can also incorporate UV systems.
