HEPA Filters

HEPA Filters in Seymour, IN

You’re probably well aware that we all need air to survive. We breathe in the air that surrounds us, and our bodies use the oxygen and other trace gases it provides. In turn, we breathe out carbon dioxide. That gas gives plants some of the elements they need to thrive and produce more oxygen for us to breathe. It’s a continuous cycle. Did you know that you’re taking in far more than just oxygen and essential trace gases when you breathe, though? Unfortunately, many of the particles in the air around us weren’t meant to be inhaled. They can even be dangerous. HEPA filters in Seymour, IN can help combat those harmful particles.

What Is a HEPA Filter?

Your HVAC system probably has a filter in place. It may be installed in the indoor heating or air conditioning unit, in a recess in the wall near the units, in the ceiling, or another area. Those filters are made up of various layers of fibrous materials that are designed to trap certain particles in the air that shouldn’t make their way into your family’s lungs. That being said, not all filters are created equally. If you’re using a standard filter, quite a few of those harmful particles could be slipping right through the fibers in the filter and back into the air in your home.

HEPA, or high-efficiency particulate air, filters work a bit differently. They’re made up of multiple layers of particle-trapping materials, but they’re much more effective at removing contaminants than their standard counterparts. They have more layers, and the fibers in those layers are arranged differently, so they simply catch more contaminants. They’re made to trap particles of varying sizes as well.

What Types of Indoor Air Contaminants Do HEPA Filters Remove?

Numerous contaminants make their way into the air in your home. They range from allergens like pet hair, dander, and pollen to dangerous substances like formaldehyde and pesticides. Indoor air pollutants also include smoke, soot from gas appliances, viruses, bacteria, mold, fuels, cleaning products, and paints. Excess moisture is considered a type of indoor air pollution as well. Those are only a few of the particles that might be circulating through your home.

Unlike standard filters, HEPA filters can trap contaminants that are as small as 0.3 microns, such as many viruses and bacteria. HEPA filters trap as much as 99.97 percent of airborne contamination, so those particles don’t have a chance to reach your lungs. HEPA filters work in different ways to catch particles of varying sizes. Some hit the surface of the filters and essentially get stuck there whereas others bounce around inside the layers of the filters and become trapped. Either way, they’re taken out of the equation, so they can’t do any harm to your family.

Do HEPA Filters Work for All Airborne Contaminants?

Although HEPA filters provide effective protection against a wide range of indoor air contaminants, they won’t safeguard against all potential threats. Gaseous contaminants can still work their way through many types of filters. Otherwise, oxygen itself wouldn’t be able to circulate through them. If you’re looking for defense against certain odors, volatile organic compounds, and other contaminants that are in a gaseous state, you might need an extra layer of protection. HEPA filters can be combined with additional air purification systems for additional coverage, though.
